Months after Android 15’s launch on Pixel, Samsung is now taking its first big step in releasing the update to Galaxy devices with the launch of the One UI 7 beta on the Galaxy S24 series.
What’s new in One UI 7?
One UI 7 is based on Android 15, the latest version of the OS which first debuted in September, later rolling out to Pixel in October, and showing up on devices from other brands in the time since, including OnePlus. However, the update has been delayed a few times for Samsung devices, but now it’s finally arriving.
Why the delays? As rumored, One UI 7 is a rather big update.
Starting with the design, there’s a visual overhaul throughout the entire system including the homescreen, widgets, and more. The notification tray and Quick Settings are also split, though that’s optional. Samsung also teases “bold, iconic design choices” which include system app icons, and there are also new lock screen tweaks as well.
One of the biggest new features is the “Now Bar,” a new notification system that Samsung is using for “relevant activities.” Primarily showing on the lockscreen, the “Now Bar” can show information such as a timer, workout, music, and more. It works a lot like the Dynamic Island on iPhone, though Samsung hasn’t mentioned whether or not third-party apps can tap into the system.
Other new features in One UI 7 include new “writing assist” AI tools which can summarize, spell check, or generate text. You’ll also find call transcripts in the Phone app when call recording is enabled.
The camera app is also getting a redesign with reorganized buttons and modes that bring “more intuitive control over advanced settings” while also making it “easier to find the features you need and to give you a clearer preview of the picture you’re taking or the video you’re recording.” This extends to the Pro Mode, with a simplified layout and the new ability to control the zoom speed.
One UI 7 beta is available today
Samsung is launching the One UI 7 beta starting on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Other devices will follow in time, as well as more regions. Initially, the United States, Korea, United Kingdom, India, Germany, and Poland will be the first regions with the beta available for download. Users can sign up via the Samsung Members app.
As for the full release, Samsung says that it will launch One UI 7 fully in “the first quarter” of 2025 after an initial release on “upcoming Galaxy S series devices” (aka the Galaxy S25). “Additional AI capabilities including enhanced on-device AI functions” will also be coming with the full release.
