The Food Standards Agency said that symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

The agency added: ‘Symptoms caused by listeria monocytogenes can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

‘Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.’

The supermarket and food health agency urged customers who have bought the pate to return it to their local Co-Op and ‘do not eat it’. Shoppers will get a refund or replacement and if they have any questions, they can contact the Co-op Customer Careline on 0800 0686 727.
