Ruud van Nistelrooy keen on Man United return amid Burnley links

Ruud van Nistelrooy has held positive talks about becoming part of Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff, talkSPORT understands.

Manchester United’s priority is to agree a new contract with Ten Hag but also know bringing icon Van Nistelrooy back would be a big winner with fans.

The Dutchman has also been interviewed for the vacant manager’s job at Burnley following Vincent Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich.

However the former striker is enthused by a role at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy played for Man United from 2001 to 2006, scoring 150 goals in 219 appearances for the club before signing for Real Madrid.

He has been out of work since stepping down as PSV Eindhoven head coach in May 2023.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, will continue as Man United boss next season, despite huge speculation over his future.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whose INEOS purchased a 25 per cent stake in the club last season, conducted an extensive end of season review.

This also included speaking to several potential replacements for Ten Hag, including Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino.

However, the Dutchman will continue and will even hold talks over a new contract.

Now, Van Nistelrooy could be part of his new look staff at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman helped the club to a Premier League title, as well as an FA Cup and League Cup during his time at the club.

He could still make a return to English football even if he doesn’t head back to Old Trafford.

talkSPORT understands he is a contender for the vacant Burnley job.

The Championship side are looking for a new manager following Vincent Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich.

Frank Lampard, Liam Rosenior and Craig Bellamy are all also candidates for the job.
