Russia has suffered 1,270 casualties in just 24 hours in one of Vladimir Putin’s most disastrous losses of the Ukraine war, according to Kyiv.

On Monday, the Ukrainian general staff claimed it had destroyed 14 Russian tanks, 22 armoured personnel carriers and 47 artillery pieces.

While the figures cannot be independently verified, if accurate, the huge losses would mark one of the highest daily Russian casualty totals of the war.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) concluded that during May, Russian losses totalled an average of 1,200 per day.

British chiefs from the MoD added that the number of Russian casualties since the start of the Ukraine war has now likely surpassed 500,000.

Russian forces are thought to have captured around 13 settlements and 116 square miles of land following a new offensive in the Kharkiv region on May 10.

However, more than 1,000 Russian deaths per day have been reported by Ukraine since the attack was launched.

Despite initial Russian advances, Kyiv claim to have stabilised the new frontlines.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

During the first few days of the May 10 offensive, fighting intensified in the Ukrainian city of Vovchansk.

Ukrainian forces in the area have claimed that the fighting is “hotter” than Bakhmut.

On Friday, Russian defence minister, Andrei Belousov said that Russia had made advances “in all tactical directions”.

By Sunday, the Russian defence ministry suggested it had taken the village of Umanske and three other settlements in the Donetsk region.
