Royal Navy seizes drug traffickers’ narco-sub and £160m of cocaine

A Royal Navy warship intercepted a “narco-sub” for the first time and seized £160 million of cocaine that was being trafficked across the Caribbean Sea.

Portsmouth-based HMS Trent, worked alongside the US coastguard and a US maritime patrol aircraft, and seized the semi-submersible vessel while it was 190 nautical miles south of the Dominican Republic.

The operation recovered 2,000kg of cocaine, bringing Trent’s haul of narcotics over eight operations in seven months to nearly £750 million. The coastguard, which brought the drugs ashore, said that 11 suspects were arrested as part of the operation.
