Earlier today, Rockstar updated the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5 and added the BattlEye anti-cheat to it. And, according to reports, this may be the first step in bringing the current-gen console version of the game to the PC.
What this means is that we may finally get the Ray Tracing effects that Rockstar added to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. Rockstar has used RT to enhance the game’s reflections. So, don’t expect ray-traced GI, shadows or Ambient Occlusion (UPDATE: the PS5/Xbox Series X versions also have RT shadows).
Alongside the RT reflections, the PS5/Xbox Series X versions had Career Progress for GTA Online. The PC version never really got this feature. Thus, now that the devs have added the BattleEye anti-cheat, we may also see it on PC.
Since Rockstar hasn’t confirmed anything, I suggest taking everything you read with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, I find it hilarious that Rockstar has been working for over half a year to bring the Expanded & Enhanced Edition of GTA 5 to PC. This should have been an easy task.
It will also be interesting to see what will happen with all of GTA 5’s mods. Will this latest update of GTA 5 break compatibility? And what will happen when, and if, we get the Expanded & Enhanced Edition?
As I’ve already said, Rockstar will not release GTA 6 on PC alongside its console versions. Still, the fact that they’ve added the BattlEye anti-cheat in GTA 5 means that the team is experimenting with it. So, it’s almost certain that GTA 6 on PC will also use BattlEye.
Stay tuned for more!
A leftover metadata file indicates Rockstar has been working on a Gen9 version of #GTAV for PC since earlier this year.
The addition of BattlEye could be seen as preparations for the arrival of the Gen9 version on PC.
