Ratcliffe founded petrochemicals giants INEOS in 1998 and has since invested in football, first with Swiss side FC Lausanne-Sport and Ligue 1 outfit Nice.

He became a minority owner at United in February by buying 27.7 per cent of the club, with his total investment at around £1.25billion.

Three months on from his purchase, the Sunday Times has revealed that he sits fourth in the list of the UK’s wealthiest billionaires in the 2024 edition of their annual Rich List. He was second the previous year.

Ratcliffe’s wealth now stands at a whopping £23.519billion, a decrease of £6.169billion, which marks the biggest fall out of the entire top 20, a list topped by investor Gopi Hinduja and family with £37.196billion.

In second is fellow investor Sir Leonard Blavatnik on £29.246billion, with landlords David and Simon Reuben and family third on £24.977billion, who own a ten per cent stake in Newcastle United.

Ratcliffe’s position in fourth sees him come above inventor Sir James Dyson and family with £20.8billion.
