According to her LinkedIn profile, Ms Reeves went straight from the Bank of England to Halifax, where she worked until December 2009. Five months later she was elected as an MP.
The Telegraph understands that Reeve’s role at HBOS involved dealing with administrative tasks, IT matters, and projects within the bank’s complaints team.
A Treasury source said the Chancellor’s online CV had been updated to reflect her experience in retail banking, which drew on “her background as an economist”.
They said: “She worked in retail banking covering various areas drawing on her background as an economist. Her LinkedIn has been updated to reflect that.”
They did not specify whether they viewed the change as a correction or merely a clarification.
The edit, first reported by Guido, was seized upon by Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary.
