Pork sausages will be blended with fake meat to help tackle climate change, Quorn has said.

The company said the move is part of its shift from encouraging consumers to reduce their meat intake rather than switch to an entirely vegetarian or vegan diet.

Meat products containing Quorn’s mycoprotein will be available by the end of the year within the NHS and from some food service operators, according to food industry publication The Grocer.

The new products, including burgers and sausages, will not carry the Quorn logo, but will include mycroprotein among their ingredients, Marco Bertacca, the company’s chief executive, told the publication.

It comes amid falling sales in fake meat products, with data from The Grocer showing sales fell 6.5 per cent last year, although Quorn’s sales rose 0.2 per cent.

The move appears to appeal to the rise in flexitarians, who choose to reduce but not completely cut out, meat in their diet.

The number of flexitarians has risen by 20 per cent since 2018, according to industry analysts Kantar, to around 10 per cent of the UK population.
