Some of the PS5 Pro’s improvements are quite remarkable, and they lay the foundations for the PS6 moving forwards. Sony’s proprietary PSSR upscaler will almost certainly be iterated upon ahead of the next generation, enabling devs to resolve clean image quality with reduced computational overheads.
In some games, like Stellar Blade and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the results are described as “game changing” by Digital Foundry. Others are less immaculate, but the AI-based nature of the solution means it’ll only get better over time.
All of this is impressive stuff, and certainly more compelling than the PS4 Pro’s moderate resolution bumps at the time – but the appeal won’t be there for everyone, especially considering the price of the platform.
“Is there an actual need for a mid-generation console upgrade for the PS5?” ponders Leadbetter. “More to the point, do the undoubted improvements offered by the end product represent good value bearing in mind the expensive price point? All Digital Foundry can really do is attempt to showcase what the improvements actually are and offer our opinions on them. Beyond that, it’s up to you. However, what’s clear is that beyond any shadow of a doubt, PS5 Pro is the most powerful, forward-looking games console on the market right now. If you want the best PlayStation experience, this is it.”
