A reliable leaker has posted hand-drawn images of what the PS5 Pro looks like, further confirming that it’s coming out this year.
The PS5 Pro has been an open secret for over a year now but, unusually, there’s been no leaked photos of it and Sony has still never acknowledged its existence – or bothered to deny the rumours.
However, highly reliable leaker billbil-kun claims to have seen retail packaging of the new console, which means it is coming out this year and, according to them, will be officially announced in the first half of September.
Because they don’t want to get sued, they haven’t posted any photos of the console but have instead drawn what the console looks like by hand… and it looks very much like the existing PS5 Slim.
Unlike other leakers, billbil-kun is basically never wrong, since their information comes from retail sources, rather than developers, and is usually relatively dry stuff about release dates, box art, and the like.
That’s essentially what this, as they only claim to have seen the console’s packaging, not the machine itself.
However, they do state that the reveal will happen in the next few weeks. This matches up with rumours from a number of sources that there will be a Sony State of Play event in September – which is also something we heard from developers at Gamescom.
There’s nothing very surprising about the design for the PS5 Pro, except perhaps for the fact that it’s still white, as sometimes redesigns prefer to switch colours.
Although it looks similar to the PS5 Slim it’s not identical, with three black strips across the outside of the case.
Apparently, the PS5 Pro is slightly thicker than the Slim model, but it’s expected that faceplates will be compatible, which is probably why Sony hasn’t changed the design much – even though it’s generally not very popular with fans.
The DualSense controller that comes with the PS5 Pro is supposedly unchanged but billbil-kun does not know whether the PS5 Pro will come with a disc drive.
It’s possible there will be two models, one with one and one without, but the version they saw did not have a disc drive, no doubt to keep costs down.
The biggest question concerning the PS5 Pro is its price, but billbil-kun offers no insight into that. He also has nothing to add about the various leaked tech specs, but then that’s not really something he usually deals with.
What the console looks like is ultimately not very important but confirmation that a reveal is imminent and that it is gearing up for a 2024 launch certainly is.
