PS Plus July 2024 lineup surprises with 8% jump in active PS5 players

Must read

Our exclusive PS Plus July 2024 player count shows a surprising uptick in the number of PS5 and PS4 players checking out the PlayStation Plus July 2024 monthly games lineup. While it’s not a massive uptick in player attention, we’re still surprised because most of that interest from subscribers was focused on PS Plus’ cheapest game of 2024.

Among Us helps PS Plus buck downward trend in July 2024

  • July 2024’s PS Plus games debuted with an 8% increase in player interest compared to the PS Plus lineup for June 2024
  • Among Us was the most popular game in the June 2024 lineup
  • July 2024’s player count still falls short of 2024’s most-popular PS Plus lineup

Using a gameplay data sample from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights), we’ve kept track of the debut player count for every PS5 and PS4 game made available via PS Plus Essential. This includes July 2024’s PS Plus game lineup of Borderlands 3, EA Sports NHL 24, and Among Us.
Compared to June 2024’s PS Plus player count, July 2024’s monthly PS Plus games saw 8.5% more active PS5 and PS4 players checking them out on their console of choice. That means July’s lineup was also played more than the games from April and February, making it the fourth-highest performing month for PS Plus games this year.

The best PS Plus Essential months of 2024 so far

  • #1 — May 2024 (biggest game: EA Sports FC 24)
  • #2 — March 2024 (biggest game: Sifu)
  • #3 — January 2024 (biggest game: Evil West)
  • #4July 2024 (biggest game: Among Us)
  • #5 — April 2024 (biggest game: Immortals of Aveum)
  • #6 — June 2024 (biggest game: Streets of Rage 4)
  • #7 — February 2024 (biggest game: Foamstars)

The success of July 2024’s lineup is largely thanks to its best-performing game, Among Us — AKA the cheapest game Sony has added to PS Plus in five years. Despite this, Among Us’ PS Plus player count was 21.15% higher than EA Sports NHL 24, the second-best performing game this month. It also saw 46% more active players than Borderlands 3, the worst-performing game from July’s lineup.
Given Among Us’ general popularity and recognizable branding, we can’t be too surprised that it’s the best-performing game from this month’s PS Plus selection.

However, the fact that the game was popular enough to pull July’s performance over three other monthly PS Plus lineups — despite only costing at most $4.99 on the PS Store — is a little surprising. Among Us is also free on iOS and Android, so it feels even more surprising that players were enticed by the PS5 and PS4 version of the game.

Top PS Plus Essential games of 2024 so far

  • #1EA Sports FC 24 (May 2024)
  • #2Sifu (March 2024)
  • #3Evil West (January 2024)
  • #4Foamstars (February 2024)
  • #5Among Us (July 2024)

It goes to show that PS Plus subscribers might not be all that interested in the tangible value of their subscription price so long as they ultimately get the games they want. Among Us might not be the best use of your PS Plus investment, but it’s still a game that PS5 and PS4 players wanted to play more than most PS Plus games offered this year.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say any of the games we got this month qualify for our best PS Plus games list, but at least we can admit that subscribers seem a bit more interested in July’s lineup than June’s lineup. Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.1 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:

  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
