Princess Beatrice gushed about her ‘incredible’ mother Sarah Ferguson as she visited school children in south London on Wednesday.

The royal, 35, read to children in Reception and Year One during a surprise trip to West Thornton Primary School in Croydon, where she praised the Duchess of York and spoke about her extensive collection of children’s’ books.

‘I grew up with an incredible mum as a children’s author, so stories really created that sense of imagination,’ the mother-of-one said.

‘I really appreciate what stories can do, that special quality time, that moment at the end of the day, but also how important reading is in general for young people.

‘Making sure we can do everything we can to make sure these books get into the hands of those that need it most.’

Beatrice was casual but chic and donned a simple black and white patterned dress paired with a cropped blue denim jacket with puffy sleeves

Beatrice opted for a casual but chic look with a simple black and white patterned dress paired with a cropped blue denim jacket with puffy sleeves.

She accessorised with simple silver hoops and a gold bracelet.

She looked in high spirits as she sat down with a classroom of kids and read When Dinosaurs Walked the Earth by Sean Taylor and Zehra Hicks.

The illustrated book is the 2024 winner of Oscar’s Book Prize and the mother is the prize’s Royal Patron.

She also sat down with the class to take a look at the other shortlisted books for the prize and chatted with students about their own reading habits.

Beatrice discussed the importance of picture books to foster children’s imagination and how they can provide quality moments for families coming together at the end of the day.

She said: ‘I got involved with the Oscar’s Book Prize a very long time ago. This year’s winner keeps the reader guessing, you never really know what’s going to happen.

‘It spreads humour and a sense of adventure, especially when dealing with dinosaurs.’

Beatrice looked in high spirits as she sat down with pupils and chatted to them in their classrooms.

She wore her auburn tresses down in a wavy blowdry and opted to wear her signature smoky eye shadow and natural makeup.

Jonathan Owen, Headteacher at West Thornton Primary School said: ‘The diversity of topics covered in children’s books is greater than ever, and those shortlisted for this year’s Oscar’s Book Prize were no exception to that.

‘We have loved reading them together and it was an absolute delight to have HRH Princess Beatrice visit and read this year’s winning book – it certainly will be a story time to remember.’

Beatrice braved torrential rain and attended a garden party alongside Zara Tindall and Prince William on Tuesday.

Around 8,000 people were invited to one of the summer highlights of the royal calendar.
