Prince William has revealed his wife the Princess of Wales is “doing really well” after she completed her course of chemotherapy at the end of the summer.

Speaking from South Africa, where he’s on a four-day trip as part of his Earthshot Prize awards, the Prince of Wales said he hopes his wife will tune into the glitzy ceremony this evening.

Asked how Kate was doing, William said: “She’s doing really well thanks. And hopefully she is watching tonight. Cheering me on.

“She’s been amazing this whole this whole year. I know she will be really keen to see tonight be a success.”

Kate, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer at the start of the year, has appeared in public on only a handful of occasions this year as she focused on her health.

Last month she carried out her first community engagement of the year, as she joined her husband in Southport to meet the families of the three girls who died following the horror knife attack this summer.

Tonight, William will attend the 2024 Earthshot Prize at a glitzy ceremony in Cape Town.

Over 2,000 guests will attend the event, held at an impressive eco-dome, which will see stars such as Heidi Klum walk its iconic green carpet alongside the show’s hosts – Emmy award winning actor Billy Porter and TV presenter Bonang Matheb.

The ceremony was targeted at young people and featured special appearances from Davido, Uncle Waffles, Ndlovu Youth Choir, Nina Dobrev, Robert Irwin and Winnie Harlow.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, William warned that without the optimism of the Earthshot awards the future is “looking pretty bleak”.

“I think the Earthshot encompasses urgent optimism,” he told the BBC. “That’s what we’re here for. And as I think you will see tonight, the amount of youth from Africa who’ll be in here.

“They’ll be letting you know and letting everyone know that it matters to them. And without them, you know, the future is looking pretty bleak.

“So these are the game changers. These are the innovators. These are the inventors that are going to make the world a better place for us in the future.”

He went on to say that at home his family adopt environmentally-friendly practices such as recycling, minimising water use and turning off the lights when they leave the house.

William said: “I brought the children along that journey and tonight I hope they are watching and they are proud of kind of what we are try to do here, which is to really galvanise that energy that enthusiasm to make real impact. “

The future King has been wearing a bracelet made by his daughter Princess Charlotte during his first major overseas trip of the year, which sweetly reads “Papa”.

Asked about the sweet handmade item, William said: “This is a relic, if you like, from a Taylor Swift concert that my daughter decided that she wanted to create a bracelet for. She gave it to me when I came away. So I promised that wear it and try not to lose while i was out here.”
