Poundland has launched its first-ever lunchtime meal deal including a sandwich, snack and drink for just £3.

In a bid to compete with the likes of M&S, Waitrose and Tesco, the bargain retail chain has today announced customers can now snag a cheap lunch deal with no need for a loyalty card.

The new ‘Grab A Bite’ deal includes mains such as a chicken tikka wrap, cheese and pickle sandwich, sushi pack and prawn pasta salad.

The deal also includes a snack such as a Ginsters Slice, small pot of Pringles, packet of Doritos or a Snickers bar.

To wash it all down, customers can also choose a drink from a range which features Lucozade Alert, Red Bull, Coca Cola and San Pellegrino.

The ranges have been developed in partnership with Greencore and On A Roll, a new fresh sandwich supplier from the North East of England.

To celebrate the launch, Poundland will be putting up Blue Plaques outside 20 of its best-performing lunchtime stores, including Deal, Kent, Princes Street, Edinburgh and High Road, Wembley.

But the meal deal will be available at hundreds of Poundlands around the UK.

Poundland’s head of chilled and frozen foods Kyle Storey said: ‘Our mission here at Poundland has always been to provide our customers with the best possible value, without compromising on taste or quality.

‘With our new meal deal, we’re not only offering an unbeatable price, but also ensuring that everyone can access a delicious and satisfying meal without the need for a plastic loyalty card.’

The news comes after MailOnline revealed the rising prices of meal deals from stores across the UK.

Pre-pandemic, commuters might have secured their lunch meal deal for a couple of pounds, but costs have since spiralled, meaning workers often have to fork out for their lunch.

How does Poundland’s new meal deal compare?

Tesco

The lunchtime main, drink and snack combo is £3.40 for Clubcard holders and £3.90 for those without one.

Sainsbury’s

A meal deal from Sainsbury’s costs £3.50.

Waitrose

Customers can now get a sandwich, wrap, salad or sushi, as well as a snack and drink for £5.

Morrisons

A three-piece meal from Morrisons costs members £3.50, and £4 for non-members.

Boots

A meal from boots costs £3.60 for advantage card holders, £3.99 for those without – rising to £4.99 in London.

Co-op

A meal deal costs £3.50, £4 for non-members.

Amid inflation hitting food prices, Sainsbury’s raised their meal deal cost from £3 to £3.50, while Tesco increased their deal by 90p to £3.90.

Co-op and Morrisons also charge £3.50 for their version of a lunch deal, rising to £4 for those without advantage cards.

Meanwhile a meal deal from Waitrose will set workers back fiver, and M&S doesn’t offer a sandwich deal at all.

Outside of the supermarkets prices are even higher: Pret A Manger may not have meal deals, but charges in excess of £7 for a baguette for non-Pret subscribers.

Even budget option Greggs has seen steep price hikes – a single sausage role cost just 85p in 2016: it’s now £1.20.

But in a sign of the continued competition faced by supermarkets – especially now Poundland has stepped onto the scene – fast food chains have also begun bringing in lunchtime deals.

In March, KFC introduced a new lunch deal for just £5.49, offering a fried chicken wrap or fillet burger, crisps or a cookie, and a water or regular drink, available from Monday to Friday until 3pm.

Last month, Domino’s also made the move, offering an irresistible £4 lunch deal.

The pizza chain offers a 7in pizza or Hot & Cheesy Wrap with a side of with Chicken Kickers, Chicken Strippers, Classic Chicken Wings, Crispy Golden Fries, or two Domino’s Cookies, for less than the price of a coffee.

And Greggs offers a breakfast deal starting at just £2.85, and a lunch deal starting at £3.60.
