Police seal off Shard End shops after stabbing – updates

Police have sealed off a shopping district in Shard End after a man was stabbed in the area on Bank Holiday Monday (May 27). The extensive cordon, near Heath Way Post Office, remains in place this morning.

Police were called to the scene at around 7.20pm last night following reports of a violent disorder. Paramedics gave the man advanced trauma care for serious injuries before being taken to hospital.




He remains in a serious condition today. Images from the scene last night showed police blocking the middle of Heath Way. Traffic was brought to a halt.

The road is no longer blocked, according to traffic website Inrix. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a stabbing on Heath Way, Shard End, at 7.20pm.

What have police said?

Detective Inspector Tom Lyons of West Midlands Police has urged witnesses of the incident, or anyone with useful information, to contact the force.

He said: “We’re urgently trying to establish what happened yesterday. We’re carrying out CCTV enquiries in the area and speaking with a number of witnesses.

“I would urge anyone with information to get in touch as soon as possible – log 3655 of May 27. We will have an increase of officers in the area to offer reassurance to the community.”

Special search powers expire

Special stop and search police powers were in place in Shard End but have now expired after a man was stabbed in the area last night.

The Section 60 powers were in place until 1.53pm this afternoon.

Probe at Post Office?

Forensic police have been pictured inspecting Costcutter’s front door, where a Post Office is based inside. It comes after a man was stabbed near the shop at around 7.20pm last night.

Witness ‘nervous’ after man stabbed

A witness told BirminghamLive: “There was an ambulance and lots of police.

“I couldn’t see anything because there were so many people. It makes you nervous – you never know if you’re going to get attacked.”

Officers carry out door-to-door enquiries

Officers were spotted carrying out door-to-door enquiries near the scene today.

Section 60 stop and search powers are in place in Shard End following last night’s stabbing. The powers allow officers tostop and search people even if they don’t have suspicions about them.

Police ‘not allowing’ residents to retrieve cars

Police are not allowing residents to retrieve their vehicles from the Heath Way car park while officers carry out investigations.

Ashfaq Ahmed, a support worker, lives in one of the flats above the shops.

He told us: “Police have blocked our cars in and I can’t take my car out. I’m getting the bus today but I have to see six people so I need my car. Last year there was a murder here, now this.”

‘Family fun day cancelled after disorder’

Costcutters in Heath Way had organised a free family fun day which was being enjoyed by locals before the disorder broke out.

A resident told BirminghamLive: “There was a fun day and my son was there all day. It was all free, all nice. Then in the evening, I saw lots of police.”

This morning, a balloon display was seen outside the shop.

‘Armed police and helicopter at scene’ – resident

A resident, who lives opposite Heath Way Shops, told our reporter this morning: “It happened at around 8pm and there were loads of coppers. I counted nine cars.

“The armed response was there too and talking to people. The helicopter was here.

“Costcutters has changed its name to Global and they had an open day. They had a big table set up with food, a bouncing castle, it was loads of fun – then all of a sudden the police came. They started tapping it all off.”

Police have launched in a probe into a violent disorder in Shard End after a man was found outside a shop with stab wounds. Officers and paramedics were called to Heath Way shops at around 7.15pm last night night, May 27.

A man, 27, was found outside a shop with multiple stab wounds. He received advanced trauma care at the scene and was later rushed to hospital where he remains today in a serious condition.

BREAKING – Police confirm stabbing

A West Midlands Police spokesperson told us: “An investigation has been launched following disorder in Shard End, last night. Officers were called to Heath Way at 7.15pm to reports of disorder.

“A man was found outside a shop with multiple stab wounds. The 27-year-old was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.”

Police working to ‘establish what happened’

A West Midlands Police spokesperson told us: “We’re working hard to establish exactly what happened. We will give more information as soon as we can.”

Heath Way shops shut to public

Our reporter at the scene this morning said all shops in Heath Way are closed due to “an extensive police cordon in place”.

She added: “Officers are maintaining a presence and, as a result of the closure, a number of businesses and facilities including the Shard End Learning Centre are shut to the public.”

Man rushed to hospital – Ambulance statement

A man was rushed to hospital in a serious condition following reports of a stabbing in Shard End last night.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a stabbing on Heath Way, Shard End, at 7.20pm. Crews found a man with serious injuries. He received advanced trauma care on scene before being conveyed to hospital.”
