TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police in Kaohsiung raided a gambling den on the top floor of a nightclub, arresting 28 people in the early morning on Saturday (June 1).
Police responded to reports that a private gambling den was operating in Kaohsiung’s Xinxing District, under the cover of a licensed nightclub, reported UDN. Police broke down a locked door on the club’s top floor and found a large group betting money on dominoes.
They arrested 24 patrons for illegal gambling, a number that included six women and 18 men. Four employees, including the primary organizer, a 29-year-old man surnamed Chen (陳), were also taken into custody.
Kaohsiung police also seized NT$110,000 (US$3,385) along with sets of dice and dominoes. An additional NT$8,200 (US$250) that had been wagered by patrons was also confiscated, per UDN.
The entrance to the gambling den was through a door at the back of a nightclub that led to a small room on the top floor. According to reports, police have also referred the nightclub to relevant authorities for investigation, and it will likely have its business license suspended or revoked.
