Police arrest ‘would-be Trump assassin’ at Coachella rally

Must read

Police say they have stopped what they described as a suspected third assassination attempt against Donald Trump.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said the man was arrested outside a Trump rally in Coachella, California on Saturday.

He was described as “illegally in possession of a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine”.

Chad Bianco, the Riverside County Sheriff in charge of local policing, said: “We probably stopped another assassination attempt.”

Police identified the suspect as Vem Miller, a 49-year-old resident of Las Vegas. He was driving a black SUV and was detained at a checkpoint near to the event.

“This incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or attendees of the event,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Mr Miller has been released from police custody on a $5,000 bail, and is due to appear in court for two misdemeanour offences in January.

Chad Bianco, the Riverside County Sheriff, who is a supporter of Trump, will speak to the public in a press conference at 6pm PT (2am BST).

However, Fox News have reported that sources close to the former president’s camp have said there was no “assassination attempt” against Trump at the rally.
