BARGIN hunters could be in with even more chances to say “thanks hun, Penneys”, if a planning application before Limerick City and County Council is granted.
Primark Ltd, operators of the Penneys brand, has sought planning permission from the local authority to extend its Crescent Shopping Centre outlet.
The planning application seeks the council’s permission for the current Penneys unit to expand into the existing Tesco clothing outlet next door – which is to be re-located to adjoin the adjacent supermarket unit.
Tesco, who itself had planning permission recently granted by council planners, is also planning on expanding its outlet at the Dooradoyle shopping centre by extending its floor area into a neighbouring disused unit (formerly a crèche).
The granting of Tesco’s planning permission appears to have paved the way for Penneys to expand its unit once Tesco vacates the unit it currently uses for clothing and household items.
The amalgamation will see an additional 1,070.6 square meters added to the Penneys outlet, with internal dividing walls between the two units removed to create new offices and staff areas.
There will also be works carried out to the roof structure of the Tesco unit, while signage both in the main shopping mall and on the exterior of the shopping centre will be replaced by Penneys signs.
Other works, including installing an air conditioning system to service the Penneys outlet, removal of an existing loading dock to the northeast of the building, and the removal of an emergency exit to be relocated also form part of the planning application.
Planners for Limerick City and County Council are due to make a decision on August 11.
