Peaky Blinders fans have been left in a frenzy after a major casting announcement for the upcoming film.
It was confirmed earlier this year that an ‘explosive’ film with Cillian Murphy returning as Tommy Shelby was officially on its way.
Further details surrounding the film have been kept tightly under wraps, though speculation has been swirling ever since the BBC series ended in 2022.
And it’s now been revealed that joining Cillian and Dune actress Rebecca Ferguson is none other than Saltburn star Barry Keoghan.
The 31-year-old Irish actor, who was nominated for an best supporting actor Academy Award for dark comedy The Banshees Of Inisherin, will be part of the Birmingham-based production in an undisclosed role.
But fans are already sharing their theories.
‘If he’s Tommy’s son I WILL SCREAM,’ @martighidinelli wrote below Netflix’s Instagram announcement.
‘OMFG!!!! your brain!!!!!’ @ricric_denae replied, with @solomonghee agreeing: ‘Might be.’
‘That would definitely work,’ @laurelmottie added.
‘That is such a good fit!!! Great casting,’ @aprils_very_own6 also commented, as @grandeefilms wrote: ‘so far this casting is perfectttt i can so see him fitting in with this setting.’
‘So excited to see what his role is gonna be,’ fan account @cillianxuniverse said.
The original series, which ran from 2013 for six seasons, starred the likes of the late Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Joe Cole, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
The final instalment saw Conrad Khan play Tommy’s secret son Duke, though it has yet to be revealed who from the original cast could be returning.
Oppenheimer star Cillian announced the news of the film earlier this year, teasing alongside an image of the script: ‘It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me.
‘It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.’
Director Tom Harper continued: ‘When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive.
‘Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.’
Creator Steven Knight added: ‘I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.’
Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
