Simone Biles makes history as first woman to land Yurchenko double-pike at the Olympics

Day four of the Paris 2024 Olympics is underway as Simone Biles leads the US women’s gymnastics team to a gold medal win this afternoon.

This year’s competition comes after the team scored all silver at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Biles competed in the all-around, vault, floor and beam, while team member Suni Lee fought for the win in the all-around, beam and bars.

This marks the fourth gold medal the team has won in the last 32 years. Biles is now the most decorated American Olympic gymnast with eight medals. This accomplishment follows her emotional decision to withdraw from the Tokyo team event three years ago after developing the “twisties,” which left her unable to complete the twists needed for her routine.

The US women’s team clinched gold after US men’s gymnastics team won their first medal since 2008 on Monday. Their victory came after a stunning pommel horse routine from specialist Stephen Nedoroscik.

Katie Ledecky also competed in the 1,500-meter freestyle swimming race this afternoon, winning by nearly 18 seconds and advancing to the finals.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff is out of the singles competition after she lost to Croatia’s Donna Vekic this morning in the third round.

An icon! Leon Marchand with another stunning swim, he wins the first semi-final, 1min 53.40secs, beating out Canada’s Ilya Kharun and Estonia’s Kregor Zirk – who lands a national record.

But what noise, the hosts are glued to Marchand and every time he enters the pool, the pressure is immense.

Off Marchand dashes, to the pool to cool down, he’ll need to flush out lactic acid from his body ahead of that daunting double – he’s back for the men’s 200m breaststroke later on, due to start at 8:59pm BST.

Team GB’s Alice Kinsella spoke to BBC One after placing fourth in the women’s team final. She said: “I am so proud of this team. We gave it our all tonight and we thought we did it – I am super proud of the girls.

“It was the most nervous I have been [ahead of her balance beam performance] I kept my cool and yes I missed my first connection, but the rest of it I couldn’t do much more. “

An electric atmosphere at La Defense Arena, Maxime Grousset was showered with love as he came out.

He grabs third in the first semi-final, with Australia’s Kyle Chalmers winning, it’s bad news for Matt Richards though, he ties up in the final 25m or so, finishing sixth and he will not advance. Time to rest up for the 4x200m freestyle later!

The second semi-final is won by Pan, what a response to a sluggish heat! Chinese fans screech in delight above the media tribune, their man is fastest in the semi-finals. Popovici second and Jack Alexy third, in what was a quicker race. Five men under 48secs.

Team USA took their foot off the gas towards the end of that final and still dominated.

They scored exactly one point less than they did in qualification where they’re allowed to have four gymnasts compete and then drop the lowest score.

The difficulty of their routines is so high other teams have to hope they wipe out multiple times to have a realistic chance of keeping up with them.

Jordan Chiles fell as she started her balance beam routine and that was the lowest score the USA posted – a 12.733. Only two others Suni Lee’s and Chiles’ floor routines scored less than 14.

Oh no! Alice Kinsella needed to score a huge 13.834 with her balance beam routine. She nails it to be honest, it’s one of the hardest apparatus and her score ends up at 13.600.

Team GB slip out of the medal places.

Simone Biles’ floor routine is a huge 14.666! Team USA win the gold!

So, for the gold. Here comes Simone Biles on the floor.

She’s free, she’s loose, she’s having fun. It’s a high tempo start with plenty of backflips that Biles lands well.

But, she slips out of the area on her third run and that’ll be a deduction. The difficulty is so high but she won’t care. The routine had a few errors but nothing to hurt Team USA’s chances of winning gold.

Those tumbles were insane. A great way to finish.

Canada, Japan and China have all finished their rotatations with none of the countries able to get ahead of Brazil. Romania are probably too far back to medal with Italy challenging for a silver and Team GB for bronze.

Team USA will ride off into the sunset and finish things off with Simone Biles’ floor routine that should guarantee them the gold.

Brazil have finished their rotations with a final score of 164.497. Team GB are up against it and will need an insane score from Alice Kinsella on the beam to clinch bronze.

Jordan Chiles’ score 13.966 is the highest on the floor in this rotation. Deservedly so.
