Nunez consoles Liverpool teammate Alisson as Uruguay beat Brazil

Darwin Nunez tried to his best to cheer up Alisson Becker after getting the better of his Liverpool teammate at the Copa America.

Nunez and Uruguay reached the semifinals of the competition after beating Alisson’s Brazil in a dramatic penalty shootout at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday night.

Following a fiery 0-0 draw in Las Vegas – which saw the two teams commit a staggering 41 fouls between them – Marcelo Bielsa‘s men prevailed on spot-kicks to book their place in the last four.

Misses from Eder Militao and Douglas Luiz proved costly for Brazil, who were sent packing when Manuel Ugarte tucked the winning penalty past Alisson.

After coming out on top in their Copa America battle, Nunez could be seen consoling a devastated Alisson at the full-time whistle.

The Liverpool forward had some words of encouragement for his club colleague before putting an arm round him and going in for a hug.

Reds supporters were delighted to see the two teammates share a warm embrace after the game, with one writing on X: ‘This makes me happy’.

‘They never walk alone,’ said another.

While a third Liverpool fan simply commented on the video: ‘Brothers’.

Nunez scored twice in a dominant group stage for Uruguay but has failed to find the back of the net in his last two appearances at the Copa America.

The 25-year-old squandered their best chance against Brazil on Saturday, sending a header flying over Alisson’s crossbar from close range.

He was then replaced with 12 minutes remaining to deny him a potential penalty against his Liverpool teammate in the shootout.

Nunez and Alisson are both set to play under a new manager next season after Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

‘I assume Nunez will fit really well into my (playing style) because I like him. I’ve told him already,’ Slot said this week.

‘He is one of the players I have spoken to. He might have had some struggles with finishing opportunities but he came a lot of times into those positions.

‘I think he could fit in really well but it’s normal at a club like this that there are many more players who could play in his position. It’s clear for him which position he is going to play.

‘It’s clear for me as well and me telling him made it clear for him.’
