‘No flights taking off or landing’ amid IT issues at Scottish airport

The airports social media account posted at 4pm on Sunday evening that air traffic control was being affected by an IT issue.

The post advised passengers to check their flight status before travelling with more than 14 flights cancelled by 6pm. Some travellers have claimed to have been “stuck” on flights on tarmac at Edinburgh for more than three hours.

A further update stated: “Engineers are continuing to work on the IT issue currently affecting Air Traffic Control.

“Passengers should continue to check their flight status with their airline before travelling to the airport.”

Several flights show as being diverted, with Glasgow Airport accepting some flights, including:

  • British Airways flight BA1462 from London
  • Easyjet flight EZY601 from Luton
  • Easyjet flight EZY3264 from Munich
  • Loganair flight LM316 from Exeter
  • Ryanair flight FR6643 from Bratislava
  • Ryanair flight RK860 from Agadir
  • Ryanair flight FR2885 from Kaunas

Two others have been diverted to Manchester Airport.

One passenger Andrea Racekova, a trainee reporter who travelled from Shetland to Edinburgh for her flight, said there are “indefinite delays” for some.

Just as her flight to Slovakia was cancelled, she told The National: “We were supposed to leave at 15:30 for Bratislava, Slovakia.

“We were asked to queue up for boarding as usual, but a few minutes later, we could hear the airport announcements about flights, one by one, being delayed due to ‘air control traffic issues’.

“We’ve not been given any new departure time so far.”

She added: “Some people are very frustrated, mainly because they are going to miss some connecting flights.

“The airport staff have been trying to calm everyone down. They’ve been very helpful, but I understand some passengers are very upset.”

Cirium, an aviation analytics firm, revealed 14 departing and 12 arriving flights had been cancelled by 6pm.

The airport was expected to see 303 flights today (152 departing and 151 arriving), according to Cirium.
