Newcastle United make player-plus-cash offer for Wolves defender Max Kilman

Newcastle United have made a cash-plus-player offer for Wolves centre-back Max Kilman, as Eddie Howe ramps up his summer recruitment drive.

Telegraph Sport can reveal that Newcastle proposed a deal of cash and homegrown midfielder Elliot Anderson but the offer was rejected by Wolves.

Kilman is also a target for West Ham United, with former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui failing with a £25 million bid on Friday.

Newcastle are understood to have made their move for Kilman in the last 24 hours but will have to improve their offer if they are to stand any chance of signing him.

It is also thought that Howe, the Newcastle manager, would be reluctant to lose Anderson, 21, but the deal in its current form is of no interest to Wolves.

Kilman, 27, was an ever-present for Wolves manager Gary O’Neil last season and has been on the fringes of the England squad in recent seasons.

Manchester United also have the former Maidenhead defender on a long list of potential options and could make their move in this window.

Unlike last summer, Wolves are under no pressure to raise money to ease financial concerns but they still might need one big sale to allow O’Neil to strengthen his squad.

Wolves rejected an offer of around £30m from Napoli for Kilman last year and then persuaded him to sign a new long-term contract.

The club captain is rated at more than £40m and the fee is complicated by the fact that non-league Maidenhead negotiated a hefty sell-on clause of around 15 to 20 per cent when he was sold in 2018 for just £40,000.
