Newcastle United star Fabian Schar played over 70 minutes with a broken nose on Wednesday evening as Switzerland drew 1-1 with Scotland in their Group A clash at EURO 2024.
Schar played the full 90 minutes for the second match in succession following Saturday’s 3-1 win over Hungary, but his night did not go as smoothly as his first appearance in the competition.
The 32-year-old’s evening did not get off to the greatest of starts when, on 13 minutes, he diverted Scott McTominay’s goalbound shot away from the grateful arms of Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer and into the back of the net.

And then Schar’s night took a further turn for the worse in the 19th minutes when he collided with Celtic full-back Anthony Ralston when challenging for a header and ended up with a broken nose.
The Newcastle defender saw out the rest of the match but it is unclear at the moment whether he will be declared fit to play in Switzerland’s final group game with Germany. Swiss publication SRF have confirmed Schar will undergo further tests before a prognosis over his fitness is reached ahead of Sunday’s game.
Schar’s injury evoked memories of Kylian Mbappe’s horror injury just 48 hours earlier. The France star collided with the shoulder of Austria defender Kevin Danso while challenging for a header and ended up with his nose out of joint.
Mbappe was treated at hospital and while he has avoided immediate surgery, it remains unclear whether the broken nose will keep him out of France’s remaining group games against the Netherlands and Poland.
The Real Madrid forward joked on X in the immediate aftermath, asking fans if they knew anywhere he could find a mask to protect his face for France’s remaining fixtures.
Schar’s Switzerland currently sit second in Group A on four points after two games and look well placed to punch their ticket into the knockout rounds of EURO 2024, regardless of their result against Germany in Sunday’s final group match.
