Newcastle makes Gordon intentions clear amid Liverpool transfer interest

Must read

Newcastle is reportedly ready to hand a bumper new contract to Anthony Gordon following his failed move to Liverpool.

Talks over a potential move to Anfield for the 23-year-old broke down last week, with Newcastle looking for ways in which to raise some cash before the Premier League’s PSR deadline. Having requested Jarell Quansah in return, though, Liverpool quickly shut down the discussions.

It was suggested that talks could be revived, although it looks unlikely now that the Magpies have completed the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively. Nevertheless, it has been suggested that Gordon’s head has been turned.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle feared that the England international would be open to a move to Anfield. It now looks as though efforts are being taken in order to keep him at St James’ Park.

talkSPORT claims that Newcastle is now looking to tie Gordon down to a new contract in order to fend off any interest from elsewhere in the Premier League, no doubt including Liverpool. As part of the deal, the forward would receive a significant pay rise.

Gordon is said to currently earn around $77k (£60k/€71k) per week, with two years still remaining on his current deal having made the move from Everton in January 2023.

The winger is currently preparing for England’s quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday at Euro 2024. Ahead of the game, he has been pictured chatting with Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez in training.
