New Thrifty MG HS Targets RAV4 AND CR-V Crowd

  • MG unveiled the second generation HS SUV at Goodwood, offering ICE and PHEV options.
  • The PHEV boasts a 75-mile electric range and more power than the previous model.
  • Prices start from £24,995 ($32,187) for the gas model and £31,495 ($40,557) for the PHEV.

The MG booth at the Goodwood Festival of Speed might be busy basking in the glow of the Cyber GTS Concept, but let’s not forget the real breadwinner tucked away in the corner. That’s you, HS. You tried, champ. The all-new, second-generation HS brings sharper style, a roomier cabin, and a juiced-up PHEV with serious electric legs.

MG doesn’t explicitly state it, but the second-generation HS is heavily based on the third-generation Roewe RX5, already on sale in China. This is evident from the shared sheet metal profile and greenhouse, along with common lighting units. However, the MG HS distinguishes itself with a unique front bumper featuring a distinct grille and sportier air intakes.

With a length of 4,655-4,670 mm (183.3 -183.9 inches), and a width of 1,890 mm (74.4 inches), the new MG HS is positioned between the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V in terms of size. Additionally, the 2,765 mm (108.9 inches) wheelbase of the new generation has been stretched by 45 mm (1.8 inches) compared to its predecessor.

According to MG, the cabin of the new HS offers increased spaciousness with seating for five and a 507-liter (17.9 cubic feet) boot capacity. The dashboard is equipped with dual 12.3-inch displays, complemented by a new ‘shuttle-style’ gear shifter on the center console.

Depending on the trim level, standard features may include a wireless charging pad, an 8-speaker audio system, a 360-degree camera, and the MG Pilot ADAS package.

In terms of powertrain options, the MG HS remains available in gasoline and PHEV forms, although the latter has been significantly improved.

The electrified setup combines a 1.5-liter engine producing 141 hp (105 kW / 142 PS) with a more powerful electric motor generating 207 hp (154 kW / 209 PS). This configuration enables the MG HS to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 6.8 seconds. Notably, the larger 24.7 kWh battery pack offers a zero-emission range of up to 75 miles (121 km)

The entry-level model is equipped with a non-electrified turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine, delivering 168 hp (125 kW / 169 PS) and 275 Nm of torque. This engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, powering the front wheels.

Pricing and availability

The MG HS is competitively priced, with the ICE version starting from £24,995 ($32,187), and the PHEV from £31,495 ($40,557). Orders for the new compact SUV are already open in the UK, and initial deliveries are slated to begin by the end of July.
