The gunman who tried to assassinate Donald Trump had concluded that the Pennsylvania rally represented a “target of opportunity” after extensive research into potential attacks on the Republican White House nominee and on President Biden, a senior FBI official has said.

Thomas Crooks hit Trump’s right ear when he opened fire with an assault rifle at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. The former president was bundled off stage by Secret Service agents. Another man, Corey Comperatore, was shot dead while trying to shield his family from the gunfire.
