A hit Netflix series has smashed a huge record as it becomes the first TV show to be number one in all 93 countries where the streaming giant is available.

The second season of Squid Game hit our screens on December 26 and already has fans hailing it as a ‘masterpiece’, saying it’s even better than its landmark first season.

Squid Game season one became the most-watched Netflix series ever after its release, and it seems season two could claim the top spot after it was announced as the number one show in every country where the streaming platform is available.

It’s a feat that not even huge shows such as Stranger Things and Wednesday have achieved, so we could see the Korean thriller series break more records yet.

The first season of Squid Game follows 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, who take part in a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion prize.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote the story of Squid Game in 2009 but it took 10 years before Netflix funded the production in a bid to expand their foreign programming.

It proved to be a great investment in more ways than one after the show quickly received critical acclaim and international attention upon release.

Squid Game season one – released in 2021 – became Netflix’s most-watched series and received numerous awards, including six Emmys.

A second series was announced shortly after and began production in 2023 before hitting our screens on Boxing Day this year.

The action takes place three years after the events of season one and sees original winner Gi-hu (Lee Jung-jae) returning as a fresh batch of hopefuls gathers to take on the life-or-death challenge.

A third and final series has been confirmed and is set to be released in 2025.

In its review of the second season, Metro wrote it had ‘jaw-dropping twists and turns’ and would ‘definitely blow audiences away once again’.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Squid Game season 2 sits at a high 84% rating certifying it fresh.

The Critics Consensus reads: ‘While Squid Game’s return can’t help but lose the element of surprise, some absolutely diabolical challenges and a knotty moral outlook keep this sophomore season thrilling.’

Season one sits at an almost perfect 95%, with the consensus saying: ‘Squid Game’s unflinching brutality is not for the faint of heart, but sharp social commentary and a surprisingly tender core will keep viewers glued to the screen – even if it’s while watching between their fingers.’

Squid Game is streaming on Netflix.
