‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Finally Gets a Title — and a Teaser Trailer

Must read

Good things come to those who wait, and we’ve been waiting a long, long time for “Mission: Impossible 8″ to get a title. Well, we got that and more on Monday. (Ethan Hunt is an Army alum — Happy Veterans Day to all!) If you need a catch up on the previous films, here’s IndieWire’s ranking of the “Mission: Impossible” movies.

In the new film‘s teaser trailer, Hunt (Tom Cruise) can be seen sprinting through a variety of landscapes and hardscapes — you simply do not mess with the Cruise formula. At one point, Hunt is running after an airplane that he presumably catches. At another he’s knife-fighting in his underwear; if you weren’t already reminded, from him rappelling into the Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony, Tom Cruise is in his 60s.

Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” will be released in theaters on May 23, 2025. As the teaser trailer, well, teases, “the fate of every living soul on Earth is [Hunt’s] responsibility.”

The synopsis for “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is about as basic as it gets: “Our lives are the sum of our choices.”

That’s literally it — and boy aren’t they.

“I need you to trust me,” Hunt tells his team in the two-minute teaser. “One last time.”

We’re in.

The “Mission: Impossible” films are a collaboration between Paramount Pictures and Skydance, two companies that will soon be collaborating much more. Skydance is in the process of purchasing a controlling stake in Paramount Global, after which it will merge the two companies. David Ellison, a Cruise friend and executive producer of the film series, will control Paramount Skydance (our working title).

“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is also executive produced by Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, and Chris Brock. It is produced by Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie; the “Mission: Impossible” movies are based on the television series created by Bruce Geller.

In addition to Cruise, “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt.

It has been a long journey to get to this point. Originally, “The Final Reckoning” was supposed to just be the second half of “Mission: Impossible 7,” which was subtitled “Dead Reckoning.” Well, that installment didn’t work out super well at the box office — especially against the beast dubbed “Barbenheimer” (the same-day releases of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”) — so Paramount, Skydance, and Cruise went back to the drawing board. What resulted were reshoots and a big delay in the film’s release — so now it’s just a standalone title.
