A young girl who was seriously injured after she was struck by a car while crossing the road with her mother has made a miraculous recovery.
The girl, whose age has not been confirmed, was holding her mother’s hand as they walked across a zebra crossing at Fairfield Gardens, a shopping centre in Brisbane‘s south, at about 1.10pm on Thursday when she was hit by a Mercedes GLE400 SUV.
She was rushed to Queensland Children’s Hospital with leg and abdominal injuries.
On Saturday, her mother shared an update about her daughter’s health on Facebook as she thanked the local community for their concern and support.
‘She is doing well and has luckily sustained no major injuries and will hopefully be discharged from hospital in the next day or two,’ her mother wrote.
‘To everyone who was there to offer words of encouragement, to the people who quickly helped to jack up the car, to the first responders and ambulance, and lovely dedicated staff at hospital.. we are very thankful.
‘We are reflecting on how incredibly lucky we are to have had such timely action, what a miracle it was that our daughter is fine, and that we have such a fantastic emergency and hospital system available.’
The mother added that the family send out their well wishes to the female driver and that they hope the accident only brings their loving local community ‘more together’.
Shocked bystanders rushed to the girl’s aid after hearing horrifying screams as she was hit by the vehicle.
One of the wheels had to be removed so rescuers could reach the girl trapped underneath the car.
Witnesses could be seen support her mother as she tried to keep her daughter calm as they waited for ambulance crews, including high acuity and critical care units, to arrive at the scene.
A worker from Carpe Diem coffee shop heard the girl screaming as she walked from the venue to her car.
She ran to the scene and saw the child trapped under the car at the zebra crossing.
‘I saw the little one screaming in pain and her mother trying to tell her to calm down,’ she told the Courier Mail.
‘She was bleeding from her mouth and had scratches on her face.’
‘I wished I could have lifted the car from her. Where is Superman when we need him?’
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
