Ministers ‘quietly’ sign off on pay deal for railway workers

Rail workers have quietly voted to accept pay offers from train companies and Network Rail, ending two years of crippling strikes that have caused misery for commuters across Britain.

The RMT union said staff working at train operating companies (TOCs) had voted to accept 4.75 per cent for the last financial year and 4.5 per cent for 2024-25. The pay offer matches that offered to drivers.

The Times understands the deal for TOCs was signed off by the Department for Transport, although ministers did not announce that an offer had been made.

Senior rail sources said the union had been asked to keep the ballot “under the radar”, although the RMT and government dispute this. The ballot started last Wednesday, the same day that members
