Mindful Tech: Innovations boosting brain fitness

TAMPA (BLOOM) – Chiropractic Physician and Acupuncturist, Dr. Cathleen Gerenger, joins Gayle Guyardo, host of the nationally syndicated health and wellness show, Bloom, to talk about tech innovations that are boosting brain functionality.

“When we focus on physical fitness, we fail to focus on brain fitness,” Gerenger says.

Incorporating brain fitness activities into our daily routine is important. She says the inclusion of technology can help people shut their brains down. It helps to guide us through meditation and thus maintain our focus on both the words and sounds of an exercise.

One of the highlighted technologies that Gerenger shows viewers is a headset. The headset is connected to an app that can be downloaded on your phone. Once turned on, Gerenger explains that the headset can help connect our right and left hemispheres of the brain. The left hemisphere focuses primarily on our logic and focus abilities. The right hemisphere, on the other hand, is where we get our creativity.

Another technology is a neural-check brain scan, which measures your heart rate variants. Probes are placed on your wrists and measurements are taken on how your brain is functioning.

Gerenger is big on ensuring her patients are eating the proper foods to promote brain health. For example, walnuts and fish like salmon or trout. Blueberries are also an easy snack to incorporate into your daily routine to improve brain functionality.

“Food feeds the body, the body feeds the brain,” Gerenger explains.
