As the latest killer app for virtual reality, Metro Awakening adapts Dmitry Glukhovsky’s post-apocalyptic franchise into a full-length VR game. Just like Batman: Arkham Shadow, Awakening is another VR spin-off of a flatscreen game series, and traditional gamers are upset.
In an interview with VideoGamer, Metro Awakening creative director Martin de Ronde tackled the issue of online complainers dogging on VR releases. While the developer understands that some gamers are missing out, there’s also the reality that these games simply wouldn’t exist otherwise.
Metro Awakening is the perfect time to enter VR
Speaking to VideoGamer, de Ronde explained that now is the perfect time for gamers to give VR a shot. If not for Metro, then maybe for Batman, and if not for that, maybe the upcoming Alien: Rogue Incursion in December.
“To a certain degree, obviously, it’s understandable if you if you don’t own a headset and you’re a big fan of Metro and you want to play everything there is that revolves around Metro, then I can understand where the disappointment is coming from,” de Ronde said.
“That said, I think it’s never been a better time to step into the world of VR. There’s a couple of pretty good reasons this holiday season [Batman, Metro, Alien] to start playing VR games.”
Sticking to the franchise’s heart
While seeing a faithful continuation of the Metro series on a platform they don’t have access to may upset players, it’s more important for the team to make sure their product sits as a proper entry in the franchise.
“There’s nothing that I hate more than having a franchise that I love dearly be tarnished,” de Ronde said. “If you know, if you will, by something that comes out and doesn’t do it justice. So that was very top of mind for us when we started working on the title.”
Metro Awakening releases on PlayStation 5 for PSVR 2, Meta Quest 2, 3 and Pro and PC on November 7, 2024.
