Forecasters said tailwinds from the Atlantic storm could bring wet and windy weather to the UK.

Met Office expert David Oliver said: “The most likely scenario is for a period of unsettled weather from Wednesday.

“Especially in the north and west with heavy rain and strong winds possible. It may be warmer and less wet towards the southeast.”

In the meantime, it will be a pleasant weekend for many parts of the UK.

Today will be fine day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells – with the longest and warmest sunshine in the south east.

There will be a few showers in the west and it will be breezy and cool in north west Scotland.

It will stay dry overnight for most people with clear spells for most and breezy showers in the north west.

Some mist and fog patches will form in parts of the country with the clearest skies.

Tomorrow will be another pleasant day for most with a good number of sunny spells.

It will be cloudier and breezier in the north with some isolated showers which will occasionally be heavy.

The new week will have a dry start on Monday morning before rain spreads from the west later that day.

Bands of rain will push eastwards on Tuesday, though it will be drier in the south east.

The Environment Agency has issued an amber flood alert for stretches of the River Derwent in northern England.

Flooding is possible for the Upper Derwent in the Peak District as well as Stonethwaite Beck and Derwent Water in Cumbria.

Locals are urged to take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.

Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.
