Met Office verdict as storm chaos set to wreak havoc on the UK – new maps

Must read

The UK is bracing for a deluge of rain tomorrow as a storm is set to wreak havoc.

A weather front working its way in from the west will bring rain, firstly, to northern and western parts of the UK on Monday, August 19. By the end of the day, the whole of the UK will be drenched by rain, weather map suggest.

A yellow rain weather warning is in place in parts of southwest Scotland, where the rain is expected to be the heaviest, from 2pm Monday until 11:59pm that evening.

Andy Page, chief meteorologist with the Met Office said: “During Monday, the band of rain will gradually move east across the UK.

“Within the warning area we can expect to see 25-35 mm of rain, with some of the wettest areas receiving up to 60 mm.

“The rain will be accompanied by strong southerly winds.”

Latest weather maps from WXCHARTS show a band of rain on Monday stretches from the northern tip of Scotland all the way down to Plymouth in the South West.

The wet conditions are partly due to impacts from Tropical Storm Hurricane Ernesto which will regain strength into Monday.

Weighing on the issue, the Met Office explained that, although the storm will weaken as it moves over the north-west Atlantic during Tuesday, it will still contain a lot of energy leading to “unsettled conditions across the UK”.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wisson said: “The once powerful system itself will break down before it reaches us, but the warmth and moisture it once contained will become entrained within a mid-latitude frontal weather system.

“This will lead to unsettled conditions for the UK, especially across the north and west, with heavy rain and strong winds expected here.”

The weather looks set to be miserable throughout the week with another yellow rain warning in place for Wednesday and Thursday for parts of western Scotland as the conditions deteriorate rapidly.

Some places could see a whopping 75-100 mm and perhaps up to 150 mm on some western-facing slopes alongside strong gets of up to 50-60mph. The southeast is forecast to enjoy the best of weather.

Met Office outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Cloud and rain clears eastwards on Tuesday with sunny spells and showers following. Further wet and windy weather moves in during Wednesday and Thursday, but the southeast often dry.
