The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Merseyside as a thick blanket of fog is set to drift across the area tomorrow. The fog is expected to fall over Kirkby, Widnes, Warrington and Ormskirk between 5am and 10am, potentially affecting journey times by car, bus and train.

The Met Office said: “It is looking like one of the first occasions in autumn 2024 when we will see more widespread fog developing overnight and lasting well into the morning. Some of this could be quite dense, making journey times longer.”

Other affected areas in the North West include Blackburn with Darwen, Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Greater Manchester, Halton and Lancashire. Flintshire and Wrexham in Wales will also be affected, and Shropshire, Staffordshire and Telford and Wrekin in the West Midlands.

People are advised to check road conditions before driving, and to give themselves extra journey time or change plans if necessary. Drivers should know how to switch on their fog lights, and check they are working before setting off. Bus and train services, flights, and ferry travel may also be affected, and travellers should check for updates.

The foggy forecast is, however, predicted to avoid most of the Liverpool and Wirral area. Weather in these areas tomorrow, September 16, is expected to be bright and sunny, with an average temperature of 19C. The clear weather, which is also forecast for Formby and Southport, is expected to continue for most of the week, giving way to clouds on Thursday and Friday.
