High-end U.S. audio brand McIntosh has announced a new Bluetooth receiver and transmitter for streaming music directly from a smartphone, tablet or computer to a home audio system via Bluetooth. The device also works as a transmitter, sending Bluetooth audio to wireless headphones and speakers.
The new MB25 Bluetooth receiver enables audio enthusiasts to integrate Bluetooth streaming into almost any hi-fi setup. The MB25 is compatible not only with Bluetooth streaming devices but can also stream physical media sources such as CDs and vinyl records.
Designed as a standalone unit with a compact footprint, the MB25 doesn’t need any third-party apps to work. With a transmission range of up to 150 feet / 45.7 meters thanks to its external antenna, the MB25 offers optimal performance when transmitting and receiving audio over Bluetooth.
The new device is the successor to McIntosh’s MB20 and retains many of the same features while also including enhancements like an illuminated front glass panel that gives feedback on audio signal rates and connection types.
The MB25 can be switched to the desired input in transmit mode and Power Control support is included so the MB25 can be easily turned on and off along with the rest of a McIntosh audio system.
The new product offers analog connectivity with a choice of balanced and unbalanced stereo inputs and outputs. The MB25 can also be used with an outboard Digital-to-Analogue Converter because it has both coaxial and optical inputs and outputs to digitally connect to another audio system.
Leveraging Bluetooth 5.0 technology, the MB25 supports a range of high-quality audio codecs such as AAC and Qualcomm’s aptX HD. There is also a 32-bit DAC for use in receiver mode and a premium Analogue-to-Digital Converter for transmitting audio. The MB25 can work as a Bluetooth receiver or a transmitter simply by setting a switch on its back panel.
In Receiver mode, users can stream audio from any compatible Bluetooth device—such as a smartphone, tablet or computer—to the MB25. The output connections can then be routed to a preamp on most audio systems.
In Transmitter mode, users can stream the music from any physical media, such as CDs or vinyl records, to a pair of Bluetooth-enabled headphones or active speakers. The MB25 can also be used with wireless audio distribution by connecting an MB25 to each audio system.
The MB25 is enclosed in a sleek, custom aluminum chassis with a black glass front panel showing the illuminated McIntosh logo. The MB25 ships with a wall-mount power supply including adapters for global power outlet compatibility.
Pricing & Availability: The McIntosh MB25 Bluetooth Receiver will be available in the UK from July through authorized McIntosh dealers and is priced at $600 / £850 / €850.
