Manchester United may have found a permanent destination for Mason Greenwood, with his price tag set to be met, as the Red Devils miss out to Chelsea on landing a free agent
Manchester United‘s squad is set for an overhaul this summer with a host of their players on the market.
Mason Greenwood, who has been away at Getafe on loan, is poised to move on, but the Red Devils want to maximise their profit for the academy graduate. Even captain and talisman Bruno Fernandes could yet depart with his contract saga still playing out.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has his first opportunity to make an impact on the playing group having bought in several individuals at board level and off the pitch. Recruitment is an area where the Manchester outfit have often fallen short and, following their FA Cup success, more signings are expected.
Here’s the latest from Old Trafford.
Greenwood’s next move
Greenwood is edging closer to a permanent Manchester exit with Juventus nearing a summer capture.
The forward has been on loan at Getafe for the past season and showed what he’s capable of, which grabbed the attention of several of Europe’s top clubs. La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that United would be prepared to shake hands on a deal with the Italian outfit should their valuation of the player, roughly €35-40million (£30-34m), be met this summer.
United have accepted that an exit is the only solution when it comes to Greenwood and there was no shortage of suitors. Spanish giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were both keen but the Bianconeri look to have won the race for the Englishman.
Chelsea top Red Devils in free agent race
United failed with a late bid to hijack Tosin Adarabioyo’s move to Chelsea. The sought-after defender was a free agent after running his contract down at Fulham and has been linked with a host of the Premier League’s top clubs in recent months.
United are known to be in the market for a centre-back this summer and, like several of their rivals, were pursuing the idea of landing Adarabioyo on a free transfer. However, the Red Devils made their move for the former England youth international too late.
He’s now officially moved to the Blues and the player has said: “Chelsea is a huge club and this is a full-circle moment for me. I was born three miles away from Stamford Bridge and made my professional debut there. I’m very excited and looking forward to helping push the club in the direction we want to go.”
Southgate’s Shaw gamble
Gareth Southgate has opted against naming Harry Maguire in his England squad with the defender unable to shake off an injury issue that hampered him in the final weeks of the season. Luke Shaw, who has also dealt with injury issues, was included in the extended squad and has now made the Euros.
The England boss originally seemed pessimistic about the left-back’s chances of making the tournament in Germany. Now, having seen him up close, he believes that taking the gamble to bring him into camp has paid off.
Southgate said: “He’s progressed really well in the last couple of weeks. We think he could have some involvement in the second group game but you’ve got to keep hitting the markers. I think you can take one gamble and that’s the gamble we’ve got enough evidence to believe can pay off.”
