The pair had actually met “in the registration service”. He said: “Alison worked for me for a while when she joined Brent council about 36 years ago, and I interviewed her for a job! The rest is history.”
Mrs Cathcart was back to work in the afternoon. “I didn’t want to miss out on the excitement,” she said.
But this left Mr Rimmer rather at a loose end: “Now it’s raining, so golf is out of the question. I can’t really go and celebrate on my own, that would be a bit ‘Billy-no-mates,’ wouldn’t it? … I might head to the pub later because Alison isn’t home until about midnight! She’s here until 10 o’clock tonight.”
Ian Elliott and Paula Diaz were another couple with strong personal ties to Westminster who made a lasting commitment to each other today. They have been together for 29 years, and – for much of this time – worked at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Asked what made him finally agree to tie the knot, Mr Elliott said: “It was long overdue! A perfect ceremony in an iconic venue. And, let’s be honest, after 29 years, I’ve run out of reasons not to!”
