Marvel Rivals has just fixed the completely broken Doctor Strange ult strategy

Must read

Playing against a good Doctor Strange in Marvel Rivals is a nightmare. Players can use his shield and flight to block Scarlet Witch’s ult completely, separate enemy souls from their bodies with his own ult for massive damage, and even use his portal to trick the other team into running off the map. When used right, he’s a Vanguard with a diverse kit that can be the deciding factor in many team fights. Since launch, though, one of Doctor Strange’s moves has had an unintended effect, giving whichever team he’s on a massive advantage right from the start. NetEase Games has noticed, and is doing something about it in the first Marvel Rivals update.

It only took a few days, but NetEase Games is already fixing the most busted Doctor Strange strategy in Marvel Rivals. Up until now, anyone playing as the Sorcerer Supreme could use their portal ability to charge their ult right at the start of a game. All they needed to do was put one portal down near spawn and another over the edge of the map, and watch as their team all jumped to their voluntary deaths. For some reason, these team kills would count towards earning Doctor Strange’s ult, so whoever was playing as him could start the multiplayer game with a colossal advantage.

NetEase Games has dealt with this Doctor Strange problem in the first Marvel Rivals update. According to the team, Strange’s ult would charge because all types of portal terrain KOs count toward his ult. You can see streamer ‘bogur’ use the strategy right at the start of a game, and it’s incredibly effective.

“When Doctor Strange’s portals triggered terrain KOs, they would mistakenly restore Doctor Strange’s Ultimate energy,” NetEase Games writes. “For now, we have disabled the portals’ terrain KO attribution to temporarily fix this issue (i.e., terrain KOs will not count toward Doctor Strange’s own KOs). Rest assured, this bug will be resolved in a future update, at which time we will restore the portals’ KO attribution.”

There are already a lot of great Marvel Rivals characters, each with their own incredibly overpowered strategies, but I’m glad NetEase Games has dealt with this Doctor Strange ability. Getting ult charge from team kills isn’t supposed to happen, so while it’s a funny ability, it needed to be removed as soon as possible.

NetEase Games has now shared the full list of Marvel Rivals patch notes, which you can view right here. Keep in mind that there aren’t any balance changes in the update, though, with NetEase Games instead focusing on fixing map, game mode, and hero bugs.
