Manchester United face fight to keep Europa League place

Must read

Ineos is “confident” that Manchester United will be allowed to compete in the Europa League next season after holding talks with Uefa regarding its multi-club ownership rules.

The MCO rules prevent one person or organisation having “decisive influence” over the running of more than one club in the same competition. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Ineos chairman, owns a 27.7 per cent stake in United and is a majority stakeholder in Nice, who also qualified for the Europa League.

An independent panel will rule on the matter before the Europa League qualifying rounds begin in mid-July.

If no solution is found, United would be forced to drop into the Europa Conference League since they finished in a lower position in the Premier League (eighth) than Nice
