Manchester Airport is preparing for a busy half term, with approximately one million passengers anticipated to use the northern travel hub over the next week. Popular holiday destinations include Tenerife, Antalya and Dubai.

The airport is predicting a record-breaking week, with this May half term expected to be the busiest ever. This follows a record April when the airport saw more than 2.4 million passengers – just over double the numbers predicted for this week.

Passengers this half term are heading off to various global locations, including city breaks in Dublin and Amsterdam. Top spots for travellers include Spanish favourites Mallorca, Tenerife and Malaga; Antalya and Dalaman in Turkey; and Dubai, which acts as a connecting hub for Far East destinations, as well as being a holiday hotspot itself.

As the summer season kicks off, the airport has introduced new mascots to keep younger passengers entertained, along with distributing activity books. Known as the Little Flyers Club, these characters are ‘said to live around the airport and are often mistaken for unclaimed luggage’.

They feature in branding throughout the airport and in children’s activity books, reports the Manchester Evening News.

This May half term, passengers filtering through Manchester Airport’s Terminal 1 will have an extensive buffet of entertainment at their disposal. A new Krispy Kreme concession is joining the line-up, hot on its heels is the Gaming Point unit that offers PC gaming and a virtual reality escape room.

Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, expressed his enthusiasm: “The airport is always a wonderful place to be at this time of year with excited families getting ready for half term getaways to any one of our 200 destinations. We are proud to serve the people of the North and have been working hard to make sure that everyone gets a great experience this half term and can begin their holidays at the airport so whether you’re flying from Manchester to Malaga, Bradford to Bodrum or Liverpool to Lisbon, we are confident you’ll enjoy your time here.”

He went on to mention plans specifically catering to the younger travellers: “This summer, we’re going the extra mile our younger travellers, conscious that they love to have things to entertain them. That’s why we’ve introduced the Little Flyers Club. We’ve got lots of plans for our Little Flyer characters and I’m looking forward to seeing what mischief they get up to.”
