Jadon Sancho and Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag looked to be an irreparable divorce, but now the pair have put their differences behind them at Old Trafford
Manchester United made close to £7million from Jadon Sancho’s move to Dortmund before he patched things up with Erik ten Hag.
Last year, it looked like Sancho had played his last match for the Red Devils after his public falling out with United boss Ten Hag. After the former England international publicly blasted the Dutchman on social media for telling viewers that he dropped Sancho due to his poor performances in training, the 24-year-old was banished from the club.
After spending the best part of four months training with the reserves, away from the first team, Sancho was loaned to former club Dortmund in the January transfer window. He managed to impress at the Westfalenstadion, contributing three goals and three assists in 17 appearances in a campaign that saw Edin Terzic’s side reach the Champions League final.
However, with Ten Hag remaining as United boss and Dortmund appearing to turn down an opportunity to sign him permanently, Sancho and the former Ajax manager have appeared to call a truce. Now Sancho has been reintegrated into first-team training, United look like they have made some money out of his temporary exit last season.
When Dortmund signed Sancho in January, they are understood to have paid £3m up front for his services. As well as the up-front fee, it’s also believed there were some other performance-related clauses inserted into the deal.
These all hinged on the number of appearances Sancho made, Dortmund’s progress in the Champions League and whether or not the Bundesliga giants qualified for the illustrious European competition.
Due to Sancho making 21 appearances, Dortmund reaching the final and also qualifying for the competition courtesy of Germany winning the fifth Champions League place, all inserted clauses are understood to have been met.
That will be a boost for United, who looked like they were going to lose big on a player they forked out £73m for in 2021. Sancho appears to have a future at Old Trafford after patching things up with his boss.
It’s reported the pair both settled their differences during a meeting at United’s training ground. Sancho has been training with the first team for the first time in 10 months.
At present, it is unclear whether Ten Hag or Sancho apologised. During the early months of Sancho’s exile, sources claimed Ten Hag would only consider the winger for selection if he apologised to him for his social media outburst.
In December, when asked what Sancho must do to be brought back into the team, Ten Hag was clear. The 54-year-old said: “It is about a culture and every player has to match certain standards and it was about that.
“What will happen there, he knows what he has to do, if he wants to return it is up to him. He knows what he has to do, it is up to him.”
