Mason Greenwood was voted player of the season after his standout loan spell with Spanish side Getafe and could be given a new contract upon his return to Manchester United
Manchester United are mulling over a contract extension for Mason Greenwood – but he will not return to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils’ academy graduate spent the last season on loan with Spanish side Getafe after it was decided that he did not have a future at the club. He was initially suspended following charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.
The Crown Prosecution Service dropped all of those charges. But Greenwood is yet to return to the first-team fold at Old Trafford. Now, according to The I, he could be offered an extended deal by the Red Devils. The 25-year-old’s current contract expires in 2025 with an option for a further year.
A new deal does not guarantee a return, rather it is hoped that they can force through a temporary sale. It is suggested that the club hierarchy are considering activating their option to then offer Greenwood out on loan again with an obligation to buy clause slotted into any agreement.
It is further reported that the Red Devils hope to receive around £40m for the striker. A number of clubs are already interested in him ahead of the summer transfer window.
Juventus, Napoli and Atletico Madrid have all been linked, while Borussia Dortmund are mulling over a deal. Barcelona have also held talks, with his loan club Getafe also aiming to retain his services.
Speaking earlier this month, Getafe president Angel Torres expressed his desire to keep the striker. “If it was up to the lad, his parents and the club [Getafe], I think he would continue for another year,” he told Radio Marca.

“But regarding Manchester [United], the news that we have from last week where the [Getafe] sporting director went to England to see some games and was with them, is that if a good offer comes along, they would want to sell because he is not going to go back there [to Manchester].
“We’ll have to wait until the end of June. The family and the player are very comfortable and very happy here, with our fans. When he came here, he hadn’t played for 16 months. He has recovered his form, he has scored eight league goals and two in the Copa.
“The people and the coach are very happy with him. I think he will remain with us for another season, or at least until January. He is a good footballer.”
Greenwood scored ten goals for the Spanish side throughout the campaign. Taking to social media after the season’s conclusion, he wrote: “Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season. Thank you for making me feel welcome and one of your own.
“I enjoyed every second, alongside my team-mates and club. A bitter-sweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best.”
