Majorca ‘shocked’ as UK tourists desert island leaving it ‘half empty’

Must read

A Spanish holiday hotspot is “shocked” at the lack of tourists with Balearic Islands overrun. Magaluf, one of Majorca’s party capitals and busiest towns, has warned it was half-empty this week as Brits deserted it amid the late May Bank Holiday weekend.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin reported that they are now worried about whether enough tourists will visit the island this year as a result of the surge in anti-tourism protests. Some say it is early days, and others claim that it is busy at the weekends.

Responding to the emptiness, one Brit said: “Going near there in a couple of weeks.. if it’s half empty then whoohoo won’t have to queue or wait too long for a drink.” A second said: “It’s cheaper to go to the Caribbean. I went to Ibiza last year to a fantastic hotel, as a family we thought we would go back to the same place, however it was 2.5k higher than last year.”

“They don’t want the tourists so let them fend for themselves. No ones fault but there own,” a third said. “Apparently 45% of majorca’s economy is tourism so they will lose a lot of money if tourists stop going,” another commented on social media.

“It’s jolly odd that not too long ago the Spanish government were talking about taxing British tourists to visit due to departing the EU. I don’t think the said government are in touch with the hardworking Spanish people who make a jolly decent living out of us Brits!” another said.

“Went a few weeks ago, lots of Spanish people in the hotel, got told the government was subsidising the costs for them to fill the hotels. Are they doing that to prevent foreign holiday makers?” another asked. The photos showing Magaluf as a ghost town come as protestors began to make preparations to Majorca’s beaches in a new stand over mass tourism.

Magaluf normally starts to get busy around this time of year, in the lead up to the holiday season.
