Mac Allister on verge of making history as Liverpool star set for City showdown

Must read

Alexis Mac Allister might have been left having to settle for just a League Cup winner’s medal during his first season with Liverpool, having previously dreamed of a possible quadruple, but his impressive winning haul continues for club and country.

The Argentine has never lost a final, and extended that run on Sunday night as he helped his homeland defeat Colombia 1-0 to win the Copa America. Already reigning world champions, Argentina are enjoying a special kind of dominance on the international stage.

And the Reds midfielder could now complete a unique treble and do something no Liverpool player has ever achieved before. After lifting the Copa America, Argentina will now face Spain in next year’s Finalissima, after the one-off match between the reigning European and Americas champions was reintroduced in 2022.

Argentina won the first edition of the revived showdown, brought back after a 29-year-absence, when they beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022. Mac Allister, then still a Brighton & Hove Albion player, was a member of that squad but was left unused on the night.

But having played a starring role both in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and 2024 Copa America in the United States, the Liverpool star will look to complete a unique treble in the 2025 edition of Finalissima.

Argentina have actually won the last two editions of the match, beating a Denmark side featuring then-Liverpool defender Torben Piechnik on penalties back in 1993. Should Mac Allister help his nation defend the crown, he will become their first ever Redsplayer to win the international prize.

And with Spain the opposition, having defeated England in Sunday night’s Euro 2024 final, he is poised for a midfield showdown with Man City contemporary Rodri in the process.

The Spaniard has emerged as a contender for the Ballon d’Or after being named player of the tournament at Euro 2024, following on from another impressive season for Pep Guardiola’s men as he helped them win a fourth-successive Premier League title.
