There will be no more full weekend closures of the M25 in 2024, National Highways has said.
Works on junction 10 (Wisley) of the motorway have meant three closures between March and July, on one of the country’s busiest stretches of road.
The most recent closure, which ended ahead of schedule on Sunday at 23:00 BST, was “a complete success”, National Highways said.
Five closures are planned in total, all were originally scheduled for 2024. The two remaining closures will now be in spring 2025.
National Highways said in a statement: “We will give a minimum of four weeks’ notice for these closures so you can plan ahead, and we will avoid busy holiday periods.”
Motorists have been warned that there will still be closures on the M25, and on the A3 at times over some weekends, but not over full weekends. Also, in the autumn there will be 12-hour night closures on the M25.
The £317m project is due to be completed in the summer of 2025 and aims to increase the number of lanes at the junction with the A3.
The latest closure saw the completion of the junction’s West Bridge, with 450- and 650-tonne cranes moving 72 beams in to place.
Between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles normally use the M25 between junctions nine (Leatherhead) and 11 (Chertsey), in each direction every hour from 10:00 until 21:00 on weekends.
