Liverpool coach appears to confirm early transfer with defender now facing exit

Departing goalkeeper coach John Achterberg has fuelled speculation that Nat Phillips could finally be set to leave Liverpool this summer as he wished the defender well on his “next move”.

The 27-year-old has not played for the Reds since January 2023 and spent this season on loan at Celtic and later Cardiff City in search of regular game time.

But when Phillips took to Instagram on Wednesday night to pay tribute to Jurgen Klopp, Achterberg, who is also leaving the club this summer and will join Al Ettifaq, hinted that the defender could be set to finally seal a permanent move away from Anfield.

“Thank you, Boss, for showing belief in me, and for giving me the opportunity and privilege to represent Liverpool,” wrote Phillips. “I’ll be forever grateful for the experiences I’ve had and the moments we have shared together.”

However, it was Achterberg’s comment that caught the most attention as he said: “You’re a good defender Nat! Good luck in your next move.”

After a successful half-season stint with Cardiff, last month Phillips admitted he would be open to a return to South Wales: I have enjoyed my time here and enjoyed playing regularly,” he said. “I want to continue to play regular football and enjoy my football.”
