Live Vote Count: Tracking the House Speaker Votes

Must read

Lawmakers will congregate on the House floor around noon today to vote on Representative Mike Johnson’s bid to be re-elected speaker. The Times will track the votes live.

Note: To win, a member must receive the majority of votes cast for a person, not counting “present” votes. The Constitution specifies that House members choose the speaker, but the speaker does not have to be a current or even a former representative.

Mr. Johnson’s ability to win re-election is uncertain, given the Republican’s slim 219-215 majority after the resignation of Matt Gaetz of Florida.

While Mr. Johnson received the endorsement of President-elect Donald J. Trump, the Louisiana congressman has faced resistance from several hard-right members over last month’s bipartisan deal to keep the government open and a failed effort to raise the debt ceiling.

If every member is present and voting and Democrats support their leader, Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, as expected, Mr. Johnson can lose only a single Republican vote.

Without a speaker, Congress would not be able to meet on Monday for the constitutionally mandated joint session to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election.
